The Housing Tower
That Broke Its City's
Planning Code — On Purpose

A new 44-storey residential block in Vienna intentionally exceeds the city's height limit by six metres. Its architects and the municipality planned it that way — and the reasons why reveal a fundamental shift in how European cities are rewriting the rules of densification.

Source: Architectural Review, Wien Stadtplanung, 2026

Every issue includes

The Lead Project

One completed or in-progress building, infrastructure project, or urban intervention — reported with full context: who commissioned it, who built it, what it cost, and what it says about where architecture is going.

The Policy Angle

The planning decision, zoning code, or municipal policy behind the week's most significant built-environment news — because no building exists outside the political and regulatory systems that shape it.

The Precedent

A comparable project from architectural history — selected to show that today's most urgent design problems have roots, and sometimes solutions, in the past.

The Number

One statistic about cities, housing, construction, or the built environment — with full source, context, and what it actually means for practitioners and citizens.
